THORNS — ILHWA HONG

The forest asked the wind to scatter bramble seeds to protect it from men’s chainsaws. The wind agreed, and the thorns grew into an impenetrable barrier. But soon, the brambles climbed the trees they were meant to protect, suffocating them.

This poetic and tragic parable has haunted Ilhwa HONG’s work for the past three years. Through drawings and installations, he explores the fragile line between protection and destruction, nature and control.

Artskoco is showing his work until November 20, and at the Luxembourg Art Week, November 10–13, 2022.

Born in 1974, Ilhwa HONG lives In Le Mans, France. After studying in Seoul, he earned a DNSEP (equivalent to a Master's degree) from the École des Beaux-Arts in 2003. He regularly exhibits in Korea, France, across Europe and the U.S., with works in major galleries and public collections including the BnF in Paris and the Vincent van Gogh Foundation in the Netherlands.
