Overview

Artskoco welcomes for the first time a famous sculptor in Korea, Heang-Gyun LEE, who works part time in Carrara, in the heart of the famous marble quarries.

His works are generally massive or even monumental. Fortunately for us, he also creates delicate works that are compatible with modern living. Heang-Gyun LEE also combines different marbles, granite, obsidian, sandstone and bronze, even acrylic.

We show two works :

The first one is “Nongae”, a seductive courtesan, also a heroe of Korea. In 1597 Wakizaka Yasuharu, a Japanese general, stormed the fortress of Jinju. Nongae took this opportunity to seduce the general near the Namgang River, and threw herself as they embraced, into the river, drowning both of them.

The second sculpture is a bronze on the recurring theme of a “windy day”, of which the artist likes to capture in stone or bronze the lightness of the wind caressing the inspiring faces of his models. Heang Gyun LEE completed in 1996 a Master in Art and sculptures at the Hongik University Department of sculpture, in Seoul.
