The Land of Morning Calm is an erroneous translation of the name of the kingdom of Chosŏn (朝鮮, literally "cool morning") from the Ko-Chosŏn period (over two millennia ago), which was adopted during the Chosŏn period (1392-1910), in connection with relations with Ming Dynasty China.
It was during the 19th century that European missionaries translated the name Chosŏn as "Land of Morning Calm." The expression, having been adopted by Koreans themselves, has since become legitimate.
